My Current Projects
Malaysia Economic Security Studies
My main project in ISIS Malaysia for 2012. My role will involve contributing a chapter and managing the project. Apparently there's a dearth in literature and opinions on how Malaysia will face the future while ensuring its citizens prosperity. I'll hope it can improve policymakers decision-making by proposing an economic security framework.
BeateniA
Yeah. This blog.
Information Graphics Malaysia
Sadly until Jan 2012 I have only created 1 content. The purpose of this site is to inform Malaysians on issues in the simplest manner and incite curiosity in them to search for more information.
Quantified Self
I've blogged about this before. I've outsourced the hosting of my public data based on my activities:
a. Roaming - Izzatina Roams
b. Eat - myeatbox
c. Read - 2011 Reading List
Granted I found enough proficiency in this field, I shall set up a Kuala Lumpur Quantified Self chapter.
R Programming Language
I'm learning how to do statistics and econometrics on R. Previously I've taught myself STATA and while in the university I used EViews. I found out the R is very flexible and its graphic properties are wonderful.
Python Programming Language
Early 2011 I intend to learn Mandarin but then I got lazy. But I promised myself that I need to learn a language, then I turned to programming language. I got into the Noob stage for Java and C++ but in the end I choose to stick with Python. I know that Python will suit me well when I want to find a new approach for quantified self and my day job.
Memorable Past Projects
1996-2000
I was made the Electronic Resource Centre's Prefect in 1996. Due to my affinity to computers and information technology I was inducted to the Input Data task force. The main responsibility is cataloguing every materials in the library/resource centre into the library mainframe. In 1999 I was made the head of Input Data and when I graduated from high school we have catalogued more than 15,000 volumes. Few years after, the school decided to upgrade to newer OS, due to some keyboard jockey short-sightedness the data collected weren't compatible to the new system and everyone have to start from the beginning. I thought me important lessons:
- Technology can really screwed you up
- Administrators/programmers don't always have the required foresight.
- Learn to deal with a failed effort.
2005-2006
Enumerator for Studies on Urban Poverty
I travelled around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor squatter areas and interviewed people. I think it is a steep learning curve for my interpersonal skills. The project fueled my desire to work in areas that will have impact on people's lives. The result of the project has turned into a book.
